Lithuania Minor

Updated: May 14, 2018

Lithuania minor is located in the west part of Lithuania and is the only region which has access to the Baltic sea.

Klaipėda is the area's city that attracts the most tourists. Albeit, severely damaged in the World War II and afterward with most of its imposing churches torn down by the Soviets, it is still standing and flourishing to this day.

Curonian spit, a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast, is a beautiful resort and the most popular tourist attraction of Lithuania Minor. Its beautiful dunes and forests that were planted to tame moving sands are inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage.

Smaller towns of Lithuania Minor, such as Šilutė, are also of interest especially for their architectural difference from the similarly-sized towns in the rest of Lithuania.

Rusnė island sometimes becomes inaccessible due to floods, but if it is accessible, it is worth a detour.

Fish soup- the Curonian fish broth, is a specialty of the region's Lagoon area. There also are Fish Soup Cooking Championships. Event attracts crowds of town locals and many visitors from surrounding regions; tasty smells and delicious fresh food turn this event into one of the most mouth-watering festivals in the country.

The most savory smoked fish can be tested in Lithuania Minor and on both shores of the Curonian Lagoon. It is another specialty, common everywhere where the access to the Baltic sea is available. Typically sold by the fishermen family members directly from the smokehouse in their courtyards, also in various public spaces of most villages during the tourist season.
