Žemaitija is located in northwestern Lithuania. Žemaitija means "lowlands" in Lithuanian. The region is also known in English as Lower Lithuania.


Tourism

Žemaitija has a huge potential for tourism development, due to its natural beauty, cultural and historical heritage. The area is attractive to many local and international tourists. The most popular tourist destinations are Kretinga, Beržoras, Šarnelė, The park of energetic labyrinths and geometric shapes, Panemunės castle, a pagan shrine in Šventoji and Žemaičių Kalvarija. Žemaičių Kalvarija (or New Jerusalem as it used to be called) is very popular among pilgrims from all around the world, due to its annual The Great Žemaičių Kalvarija Church Festival.


Rumšiškės

Houses were also traditionally very different than elsewhere in Lithuania and several example homes can be seen at Rumšiškės. Rumšiškės is a massive open-air museum located only a couple hour drive from Vilnius (near Kaunas) and is worth a visit if you have time.


The cuisine of Žemaitija

The cuisine of Žemaitija mostly contains potato dishes.The most popular dish around here are Žemaitiški pancakes. They are potato pancakes stuffed with meat and formed in a flattened football shape. Of course the cuisine also includes cepelinai – a very traditional and delicious potato based meal, potatoes with a garnish and mashed potatoes are also well liked.


Traditional clothing.

The colors green red and yellow, authentic Lithuanian patters and embroidery are usually used while making the costumes. Also Ember necklaces and white scarfs are used as an accessory.
